The Masterpiece Affair by Kenneth Royce
“Is it so dangerous?”
I stiffened and she noticed it.
I felt her vertebrae under my fingertips as she stiffened with me. Then her arms came round my back and her hands pressed hard against my shoulder blades.
“Not really,” I replied far too late. “But tricky.”
“You never lie well to me.” Her face was still against mine and some of its warmth had gone. “The truth, Willie; a half truth will worry me far more.”
“It’s a bit dodgy,” I admitted. “But it’s got to be done.”
“Tell me about it. All about it.”
I told her. That night she stayed at my place. The Ovaltine didn’t make her sleep.
